Shaftsbury runs north from Bennington along Route 7A, through South Shaftsbury and Shaftsbury Center, with Lake Shaftsbury State Park and the Robert Frost Stone House Museum among its landmarks. It is a rural town of old farmhouses, barns and outbuildings, mixed with newer houses built along its back roads.
That mix means a wide range of work in a single town: a 19th-century farmhouse that needs its wiring brought up to date, a barn or garage that needs power, a newer house where the owner wants an EV charger or a generator inlet.
Barns, garages and workshops
Outbuildings are where wiring tends to be improvised. A proper feeder from the house, a small subpanel in the building, and lights and outlets suited to dust and cold make a shop safer and more useful.
Farmhouse wiring
Farmhouses were usually wired in stages as power came to the roads. We often find mixed generations of wire and boxes. Sorting them out and grounding the system properly is the first step before anything new goes in.
Out of town means longer outages
Rural roads tend to be lower on the restoration list after a storm. Homes with wells and boilers benefit from a generator inlet and interlock so the essentials keep running.

How do I get power out to a detached garage or barn in Shaftsbury?
The usual way is a feeder from your house panel to a small subpanel in the outbuilding, run underground in conduit or as direct-burial cable at the depth the code requires.
The wire size depends on the distance and what you plan to run. A long run sized only for the breaker can leave tools and lights starved for voltage, so we size for both.
Are extension cords out to the barn okay for the winter?
No. Extension cords are for temporary use. Run full-time, outdoors and through doors, they get crushed, overheat and wear through, and many barn fires start that way. A permanent circuit is the fix.
Can you add an EV charger to a newer Shaftsbury home?
Usually. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and the panel has to have the capacity for it. We do a quick load check first, then run the circuit and mount the charger where you park.
